Compiled from NCAA, ECU and staff reports
East Carolina's Julien Dunkley won the 60-meter dash title
in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at Fayetteville, Ark., on
Saturday.
Dunkley broke the tape in 6.54 seconds, easily outpacing
Mississippi State's Pierre Browne (6.60) and Texas's Tre Gardner (6.62), who
placed second and third, respectively.
The Westbury, NY, senior's time was only a whisker off the
NCAA Meet record of 6.52, set by Marcus Brunson of Arizona State in 1999.
Dunkley also joined ECU sophomores Benjamin Henderson and
Darrus Cofield and freshman Michael Hillian on the Pirates 4x400-meter relay
team, which earned a 10th place finish on Saturday in a time of 3:09.58.
In capturing the 60-meter dash title, Dunkley became East
Carolina's first national champion in any sport since the school moved up
from the NAIA ranks to the NCAA four decades ago.
The title was also a first for Pirates track coach Bill
Carson, who has produced dozens of All-Americans, including a number of
world-class sprinters, since arriving at ECU in 1967.
