(Click here for thumbnail profiles of all known East
Carolina football commitments.) Ryan Dougherty (5-11,
185), P/K, Orlando (Fla) Boone ... Visited ECU the weekend of Jan. 19 and
committed. ... Dougherty is rated one of the top six kicking specialists in
Florida by recruiting analyst Bill Buchalter of the Orlando Sentinel and was
All State in the 6-A class. ... He averaged 41.1 yards per punt last season
although he sacrificed distance on occasion to kick out of bounds. ... What
the Pirates were likely most impressed with is Dougherty’s ability to
consistently kick off to the end zone, a deficiency in recent seasons for
ECU. ... Buchalter also called Dougherty “a big time soccer talent.” ...
Only played two years of football but also developed into a quality receiver
and a back-up quarterback. ... Ran for touchdowns twice from field goal
alignment his senior season when he made 2 of 3 field goal attempts. ...
Prep coach was Phil Ziglar. ... His team went 8-3 and won its district title
but lost to the eventual state champion in the first round of the playoffs.
... Was also recruited by Central Florida, Miami and Memphis. ... Boone
program has produced former Florida State punter Keith Cottrell and Indiana
punter Ryan Hamre.
Though it is almost two weeks until signing day,
it is believed that East Carolina
has already received commitments from more than 20 players. A verbal commitments is not binding but signals a
prospect's intention to ink a formal letter-of-intent on signing day. The NCAA's official signing day for the 2002 recruiting class is February 6.
Dougherty is the 19th known commitment posted to
Bonesville.net's football recruiting page. For the complete list of
