Of 11 prospects who visited East Carolina on the final
weekend before signing day, four had committed to ECU as of Monday,
bringing to 20 the number of players committed to the Pirates for
football scholarships for the 2003 signing class.
The national signing period starts on Wednesday and East
Carolina will host a gathering for the occasion which will be open to
the public at 4 p.m. that day at the Murphy Center. Information on the
ECU signees will be displayed and their video highlights will be
presented. Members of the new ECU football staff will be on hand to meet
Pirates fans and light refreshments will be served.
In addition to Monday's batch of commitments, the
signees are expected to include wide receiver Iverick Harris of
Burlington Cummings, defensive tackle Shauntae Hunt of Warren County and
defensive tackle Eric Terry of Richmond County. Those three players
signed with ECU last year but wound up as academic non-qualifiers as
high school seniors and have not been included in previous scholarship
limit counts.
The NCAA allows a total of 85 scholarships on the
Division I-A level and a maximum of 25 signees for one year. New coach
John Thompson has said he expects to sign close to the 25-player limit
this year.
The four players who committed to ECU on Monday after
weekend visits were defensive back Erode Jean of Fort Pierce (Fla.)
Westwood, defensive end Brandon Jones of Hialeah-Miami Lakes (Fla.),
tight end Mark Jones of Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor High School and tight
end Emanuel Levell of Miami (Fla.) Edison.
Jean is rated a step faster by coach Kevin McMahon than
high school teammate and fellow ECu recruit Tommie Bradley, a defensive
back who made the state finals in the 200 meter last year.
The Pirates beat N.C. State in the recruiting battle for
Brandon Jones. Wolfpack assistant Doc Holliday and NCSU head coach Chuck
Amato had both been to visit 6-foot-6, 240-pounder who has 4.6-second
speed for 40 yards.
Mark Jones has been recruited in basketball by Old
Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth and Norfolk State.
Levell went out in the sixth game of the season with
ligament damage in a knee and his coach said the injury may have cost
his team a state title.
