East Carolina continues to
delve into the junior college ranks in search of players who can quickly
help boost its football fortunes after a 1-11 season in 2003. The Pirates
have added tight end Shawn Levesque of Kilgore College in Kilgore, Tex., to
their list of incoming signees.
Levesque, who is listed at
6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, is the fourth junior college player signed by ECU
and the second tight end.
The Pirates didn’t have a true
tight end in the previous offensive system of Coach Steve Logan and used
several players in the system of former offensive coordinator Rick
Stockstill last season, including true freshman Josh Coffman, converted
quarterback Kort Shankweiler, former lineman James Myrick and ex-minor
league baseball player Tutu Moye.
Levesque, from League City,
Tex., signed with ECU on Dec. 30. He helped the Rangers to a 6-4 overall
record in 2003. The possibility of immediate playing time was an incentive
for Levesque, although ECU has also signed tight end Willie Metcalf of Pima
College in Tucson, Ariz.
The Pirates also dipped into
the juco ranks to ink Pima safety Zach Baker and Reedley (Cal.) offensive
lineman Joel Renaud. In addition, ECU has a commitment from offensive
lineman Brian Smith of Holmes Community College in Goodman, Miss.
