East Carolina’s 2004 football signing class has received a wave of commitments following a major recruiting weekend that brought 19 prospective players to Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium on Saturday night, Jan. 10.

The Pirates got commitments from 10 of those players during their official visits and added another verbal on Monday from New Bern High quarterback Davon Drew.

Quarterback Patrick Pinkney of Fayetteville Pine Forest had confirmed on Sunday that he planned to play football at ECU, the alma mater of his father, Reggie, a defensive back for the Pirates from 1974-76.

The Pirates’ weekend haul also includes three defensive ends, a linebacker, four defensive backs and one wide receiver. Four players come from programs in Florida and four from Georgia. The incoming players generally come from successful programs, including two players off Miami (Fla.) Monsignor Pace High, the Florida 3-A champions.

Defensive end Durwin Lamb and defensive back J.J. Millbrook will join the Pirates from Pace.

“They did a good job recruiting our kids,” said Washington County (Ga.) coach Rick Tomberlin, who has developed ECU-bound linebacker Tony Richardson and speedy future Pirates defensive back Stacy Walls. “They were blown away.”

The Pirates have also attracted defensive back Ted Riley from American Heritage High in Boca Del Ray, Fla. and defensive end Steve Belford of Lake Worth (Fla.) High.

ECU fans will remember ECU receivers Keith Stokes and Derrick Collier as well as noseguard Ronald Pou, who transferred from Georgia Military College. The Pirates have added Demetrius Hodges from that program and expect an immediate impact from the defensive back, who will come to ECU as a junior academically.

Sean Walker, a fleet receiver from Jefferson County High in Louisville, Ga., also chose the Pirates.

ECU also expects to add defensive end Jarrett Wiggins from an outstanding program in Camden, S.C. Wiggins was recruited by former Pirates offensive coordinator Rick Stockstill before he left to join the staff of Lou Holtz at South Carolina.

Drew joins Antonio Miller of Charlotte Olympic and Pinkney as incoming quarterbacks. Drew guided the Bears to the state 4-AA final the last two years, passing for almost 3,000 yards in the process. Being close to home was apparently a factor for Drew, who was also recruited by Clemson and Maryland.

In other Pirates recruiting news, tight end Shawn Levesque of Kilgore (Texas) College has enrolled at ECU, the fourth junior college transfer to join the program for 2004.

The Pirates have apparently lost out on defensive back Jonathan Warren of Madison County (Fla.), who had made a soft commitment to ECU several weeks ago. He will apparently accept a scholarship offer from Florida State instead.
