East Carolina University SID Press Release -
10/05/01
GREENVILLE, N.C. - After 16 years as a member of the Colonial Athletic
Association, the East Carolina University baseball program will begin its
first season in Conference USA in 2002 and head coach Keith LeClair
announced his team's schedule for the upcoming season Friday.
The Pirates, which advanced to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament,
first Super Regional and finished ranked No. 11 nationally last season, will
play 34 of their 56 games at Harrington Field.
Highlighting the list of non-conference opponents this season are home games
against Delaware, Central Florida and Virginia Commonwealth, all of whom
participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. The Pirates have 14 games against
five teams that participated in postseason play last year, including new
conference rivals Houston and South Florida. The Pirates will
open the season at home on Feb. 15-17 with a three-games series against
America East champion Delaware. In addition to its three-game slate with the
Blue Hens, the Pirates have
home-and-home series scheduled with VCU, Old Dominion and UNC Wilmington for
a total of nine games against members of the Colonial Athletic Association.
Other non-conference games feature a three-game series in
Greenville with Central Florida, which advanced to a regional title game
against South Carolina last season; home-and-home series with North
Carolina, Campbell, Duke and Elon. ECU will host two of
Conference USA's three 2001 NCAA Tournament participants. Houston lost at
the Houston Regional, while South Florida lost in the third round of the
Wilson Regional after losing to the Pirates in the second round. Other C-USA
opponents slated to visit Harrington Field are TCU, Saint Louis and
Louisville. The Pirates will play their first-ever Conference
USA game at Cincinnati on March 15. East Carolina will also make visits to
UAB, Charlotte, Memphis and Southern Miss.
Due to the rotational structure of the Conference USA
schedule, the Pirates will play 30 conference games each season, facing 10
of 11 opponents. ECU will face its traditional rival, Charlotte, each season
while playing the other 10 league members on a rotational basis.
Fourteen of the first 15 games will be played at Harrington
Field, including the first 10. The Pirates' 34 home games are the most since
playing 37 at Harrington Field in 1990. East Carolina is
scheduled to serve as the host institution for the 2002 Conference USA
Tournament, slated to be held at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, N.C., May
22-26. The NCAA regional round will be held on campus sites May 31-June 2,
while the Super Regionals will be held June 7-9. The College World Series
will be June 14-22 in Omaha, Neb.
