Pirate Hurlers Narron and Brinson
Named to Preseason All-America Team

From Staff and ECU Reports

GREENVILLE, N.C. — A pair of junior pitchers who played key roles in East Carolina's drive to the NCAA Regional championship last season have been named preseason All-Americans.

Sam Narron, a member of the Pirates' starting rotation, and southpaw reliever Will Brinson were tabbed for the honor by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), which recently announced its third annual preseason All-America team.

Narron tied ECU's single-season record for victories last year with a 12-1 record while also earning a spot on the Academic All-America team. A first team All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) selection in 2001, he struck out 67 batters and posted a 2.67 ERA.

Narron, from Goldsboro, tossed a complete game five-hitter in the championship game of last spring's NCAA Regional at Wilson, N.C., to help the Pirates advance to their first Super Regional.

Brinson, who led the CAA in saves last year with eight, posted a 3-1 record with a 2.36 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 34innings pitched. At the end of the 2001 season, the Greenville hometown product was selected a third-team member of the NCBWA All-America squad.

The Pirates, who will be competing in Conference USA in 2002, open their schedule against Delaware on February 15 at Harrington Field.
