GREENVILLE — The East Carolina baseball team is ranked No. 29 in the
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll, marking the second
consecutive season that the Pirates have earned a top 30 preseason ranking.
ECU began the 2001 season ranked No. 23 by Baseball America and No.
30 by Collegiate Baseball.
The Pirates received 416 points in the recently released Collegiate
Baseball poll, 15 points shy of earning their second consecutive
preseason top 25 ranking.
Stanford received 497 points to claim the No. 1 spot, followed by Florida
State at No. 2 and fellow Conference USA member Tulane at No. 3. USC, LSU,
Clemson, Miami (FL), South Carolina, Wichita State and Oklahoma State round
out the top 10.
East Carolina returns 20 lettermen for the 2002, including 10 pitchers who
combined for a 40-12 record, led by senior Jason Mandryk and a pair of
preseason All-Americans, Sam Narron and Will Brinson. Mandryk posted the
11th lowest ERA in Division I baseball in 2001.
All-CAA selections Bryant Ward and Clayton McCullough also highlight the
list of veteran players.
Last season the Pirates finished ranked No. 11 in all three major polls —
Collegiate Baseball, Baseball America and the ESPN/USA Today
Coaches Poll. They also claimed their highest final RPI ranking in school
history by finishing the season at No. 4.
The Pirates open the regular season at Harrington Field on February 15 with
the first game of a three-game series against Delaware, an NCAA Regional
participant in 2001.
