GREENVILLE — Many East Carolina athletes excel in the classroom and on the field. A number of them were honored Saturday morning for their well-rounded achievements.

ECU baseball standout Sam Narron and swimmer Courtney Foster received ECU's Outstanding Male and Female Scholar-Athlete Awards at the 2002 Breakfast of Champions.

Narron, a junior from Goldsboro, has maintained a 3.75 grade point average as a biology major. On the baseball diamond, he has a career record of 25-7 and was a first-team ABCA All-East and All-Colonial Athletic Association selection last season. He was named to preseason All-America and All-Conference USA teams prior to the 2002 season. He has contributed community service work to the children's hospital and with ALS fundraisers.

"Sam is an outstanding leader on and off the field," assistant baseball coach Tommy Eason said. "What makes Sam different than most athletes is his positive attitude and an unbelievable work ethic that will undoubtedly make him successful no matter what avenue he pursues."

Foster is a senior with a 3.69 GPA in elementary education. The Lawrenceville, GA, native is the fastest sprint freestyle swimmer in ECU history — she holds three of the school's varsity records and two Minges pool records. She earned All-C-USA designation in seven events this past season. Foster has also contributed hundreds of hours to community service, including volunteer work with the Humane Society and Special Olympics.

"I have never coached anyone with more determination and focus than Courtney," ECU head swimming and diving coach Rick Kobe said. "When you look at how an individual's experience in athletics can make a positive contribution, Courtney Foster should be everyone's role model."

The honor, sponsored by PCS Phosphate and the ECU Department of Athletics, is the most prestigious award presented annually to a male and female student-athlete.
