'Crump' set for induction in N.C. Sports Hall

GREENVILLE — Carlester Crumpler, Sr., considered to be one of the best running backs ever at East Carolina, has been chosen to be part of the 2002 induction class for the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be held May 15 in Raleigh.

Joining Crumpler in the induction class will be Dominique Wilkins, Terry Holland, Tony Cloninger, Joe Ferebee, Jerry Steele and Doug Wilkerson.

Crumpler, who currently serves as an academic advisor in the ECU Department of Athletics and as football analyst on the Pirate Sports Network, was a star running back at Wilson Fike High School.

At ECU, he set seven rushing records, including 2,889 career yards, 37 career touchdowns, and 1,309 yards rushing in 1972. He was honorable mention All-America in 1972 and 1973 and was voted Southern Conference Athlete of the Year in 1972.

Crumpler went on to play for the NFL`s Buffalo Bills.

Established in 1963, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame has 201 members which are featured in a display at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh.
