NFL Draft: Garrard to Jax, Henry to Miami
From ECU Media Relations
GREENVILLE — Former East Carolina quarterback David Garrard, who
completed his collegiate career this past season as the Pirates` all-time
leading passer, was selected in the fourth round of the 2002 NFL Draft by
the Jacksonville Jaguars, while former Pirate running back Leonard Henry was
picked in the seventh round by the Miami Dolphins.
Garrard was the 108th pick overall and the fifth quarterback taken in the
draft. At ECU, he is the school record holder in several career and season
passing categories, including career marks for total offense (10,238 yards),
passing yards (9,029), completions (666), and touchdown passes (60). He was
a second team All-Conference USA pick in 2001 after leading the Pirates to
their fourth consecutive non-losing season and their third straight bowl
appearance.
He is the only offensive back chosen through the first six rounds by the
Jaguars, who completed a 6-10 season in 2001, and is expected to compete for
the role of Mark Brunell`s backup at QB.
Henry was the 241st overall selection and is also the lone offensive back
drafted by the Dolphins. In 2001 at ECU, Henry was a third-team All-America
pick and rushed for a Conference USA single-season record 1,432 yards. He
finished his ECU career ranked No. 2 on the school`s all-time rushing list
with 3,089 yards. At Miami, he will have an opportunity to play behind
former Heisman Trophy winner Ricky Williams, who was recently traded to the
Dolphins from the New Orleans Saints.
