Griffin signs free agent deal with Steelers

From ECU Media Relations

GREENVILLE — East Carolina's Pernell Griffin will have an opportunity to determine if his rugged style can earn him a spot on the roster of an NFL franchise famous for defense — the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Griffin, a 6-1, 253-pound linebacker, is one of 18 rookie free agents signed so far by the Steelers. Pittsburgh took one linebacker — Michigan's Larry Foote — in the NFL draft over the weekend and picked up three more, in addition to Griffin, as free agents.

Griffin finished his four-year collegiate career as Conference USA's all-time leading tackler with 460. He was a fourth-team All-America pick last season and has won first-team All C-USA honors three times.

A native of Williamston, Griffin finished 2001 ranked sixth in the nation with 13.9 tackles per game and set a school single-game record by racking up 24 tackles against Wake Forest.
