NEW ORLEANS — East Carolina sophomore infielder Darryl
Lawhorn has been named to All-Conference USA for the second straight year,
the league announced this week as the 2003 C-USA Baseball Tournament was
about to begin.
Lawhorn, a second team selection, was last season's league
freshman of the year and a first-team member of the All-Conference squad. In
2003, he spent much of his time at shortstop after earning the 2002
accolades as a first baseman.
The Pirates also placed two players on the All-Freshman Team. Third baseman
Mark Minicozzi and catcher Jake Smith were honored, marking the first year
that ECU has had two representatives on that select list.
Lawhorn led the Pirates this season with a .325 batting
average and 46 runs scored heading into the conference tournament. He had
hit 13 home runs and 42 RBI while playing primarily at shortstop and in the
outfield.
Minicozzi, a redshirt freshman, batted .263 with seven home
runs and 31 RBI as ECU's everyday third baseman, while Smith, a true
freshman, played in 39 of ECU's 55 regular season games hit .298 with nine
home runs and 25 RBI.
