PART TWO: DEFENSE
Big
talents must fill big shoes
Now for a look at East Carolina's 2010 defensive unit.
On the one hand, what is clear from the unit’s performance in the spring is
that it is big, strong, fast, and talented. Obviously, there has been an
uptick in the raw talent being infused in the program. On the other hand,
when you have to replace, wholesale, nine starters in your lineup, you are
simply not likely to be anywhere as good as you were the previous year. And
at East Carolina, defense has won two straight Conference USA championships. Getting
through the brutal East Division requires a defense that can dish it
out, so there are more questions than ever for this defense.
That said, there are a lot of guys vying for starting
jobs that have pretty good game experience which should go a long way in
helping to field a competitive starting unit. However, depth will likely be
an issue. With the offense going at warp speed, how well conditioned ECU's
defenders are will likely make the difference in whether we are looking at a good
unit that gets better and better all season or if we have a unit that fades
after the intermission each game.
The
following is a position-by-position breakdown of the returning Pirates based
on previous experience and what we think we learned in the spring. The ↑→↓
symbols next to each position header are an indicator of the relative
strength or weakness of the entire unit, not necessarily a reflection of the
first units. This rating is based not just on returning talent and
experience, but more so on depth or question marks at the position.
