↓ PUNTER ↓
- Nathan Przestrzelski (RS-SR): Przestrzelski
has been with the program for several seasons during which he found himself
behind the NFL-drafted All-America punter Matt Dodge, who now plies his
wares for the New York Giants. Judging from his spring camps, Przestrzelski has struggled with inconsistency, which is perhaps why he
finds himself in a battle for the job with a redshirt freshman. This
battle will likely come down to the wire in the fall with the staff
facing the decision on whether to go with a freshman for the future
rather than a senior who has not grabbed the job for himself.
- Matt Millisor (RS-FR): Millisor turned some
heads in the spring, showing that he was not just a placekicker. Though
he is on the depth chart at the PK position, he is atop the depth chart
at punter. A strong legged kicker who is a technician in style, his
upside at punter is pretty good given he is just a redshirt freshman. He
will have to win the job outright in the fall, but is likely the odds-on
favorite.
Position Analysis – Of all the positions
on the field up for grabs, this one must be one of the most worrisome for
the staff. The Pirates traditionally have had superior punters and now find
themselves in a quandary in the wake left by the graduation of Dodge. While Millisor is showing some good things, he is a
redshirt freshman and is by no means reliable. Przestrzelski has not been
able to find consistency in nearly four years in the programr. This is
a position that can dictate success on the field, so it is going to be a big
question mark for the Pirates, one that time won’t necessarily solve. Look
for this to be a major weakness in the Pirates lineup this season.
