PART ONE: OFFENSE
Air Raid
battle plan taking shape
East Carolina's newly-minted, high-octane, light-up-the-scoreboard offense is
going to have to produce to allow for a depleted Pirate defense
to get its legs and start to pull its weight on game days. While Coach
Ruffin McNeill has
no intention of being a Conference USA West team in the Eastern Division, the Pirates
may need to resemble one for awhile if the team hopes to make a real run at
its third straight C-USA Title.
It would seem that the Pirates have two of the three
keys for Offensive Coordinator Lincoln Riley’s offense to fly with hopes
that the third component will emerge by the season opener. It takes a host
of talented wide receivers, a protection-minded offensive line, and a
quarterback with great accuracy and the ability to read the defense quickly.
Save a sure bet quarterback at this time, the Pirates appear – on paper at
least – to possess the other two components. With as deep and talented a
wide receiver corps that has ever donned the purple and gold and a three
starting offensive linemen back from a top tier unit a year ago, the Pirates
have two pieces and place and will pin their hopes on a quarterback to do
what a first year quarterback rarely does: Performer at a high level.
The
following is a position-by-position breakdown of the returning Pirates. The
↑, →, ↓ symbols next to each position header are an indicator of the
relative strength or weakness of the unit. This rating is based not just on
returning talent and experience, but also on depth or question marks at the
position.
