Hokies ripe for the plucking

I am a firm believer in the psychology of sports. How a team is thinking goes a long way toward how that team performs each week. With that in mind, I thought South Carolina played with a hint of desperation in its 33-23 victory over East Carolina in Columbia on Saturday night. ... More from Brian Bailey...

Pirates move ball in loss

Al Myatt

COLUMBIA, SC — COLUMBIA, SC — Regardless of the venue and caliber of opponent, East Carolina's goal was to win a football game at Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday night. The fact that the Pirates topped No. 21 South Carolina 453-441 in total yardage was little consolation in a 33-23 ECU loss. ... More from Al Myatt...

Cam Worthy (6-3, 220) provides the 2014 East Carolina football offense with a big, physical weapon at the outside wide receiver position. The Blair, SC, native caught 19 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in the 2013 Pirate campaign. Thus far in his senior season, Worthy has five receptions for 78 yards including a 17-yard touchdown catch last week at South Carolina.

Worthy’s strength and conditioning numbers are the finest among his position, including a 43-inch vertical jump — the third highest mark recorded by a Pirate football player.

Cam took time to talk with Bonesville after practice Tuesday evening.

Q: Favorite restaurant in Greenville?

A: Waffle House.

Q: Favorite TV show?

A: The Simpsons.

Q: What is your favorite class you've taken at ECU?

A: Senior capstone.

Q: Do you have any routines or rituals you do before games?

A: Whatever stadium I come out of, I like to go sit on the bench and look around. I've come a long way since junior college so I just like to thank God for where I'm at right now.

Q: Who has been the most influential person in your life?

A: My mom and dad and my trainer. I really can't single out between those three.

Q: What is your favorite memory playing football?

A: Just the guys in the locker room. It's like a brotherhood — its more locker room stuff than on the field.

Q: What did Lincoln Riley say to you and fellow seniors Justin Hardy, Breon Allen and Shane Carden before you guys walked off the field after the South Carolina game?

A: I'm going to keep that between us, the seniors. He basically summed it up that we're a good team, don't let this one loss affect the rest of the season.

Q: What, if anything, does the Pirate offense need to do differently against Virginia Tech as opposed to South Carolina?

A: All we have to do is play our game, nothing different.

Q: How much did you learn about football from your brother Sedric Griffin (linebacker at Georgia Tech from 2006-2009)?

A: He taught me how to read coverages when I was in 9th grade — how they disguised coverages, and that really helped me out.

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A: I want to play professional football.

Q: Perhaps your biggest touchdown as a Pirate came on the throwing side of a pass to quarterback Shane Carden — how exciting was that play for you?

A: It was pretty exciting, but nothing like the excitement from winning the game. Nothing is more important than the win.

Q: Both South Carolina and Virginia Tech are hostile environments for opponents. How do you stay focused on playing your game?

A: I try not to think about it at all. I just go out there and try to do my job, not get outside myself.

Q: What is your favorite Pirate football uniform combination?

A: I'm an all black guy.

Q: How would you describe Ruffin McNeill's coaching style?

A: He's a player's coach. The things he does outside of football shows he cares about you.

Q: What is your favorite thing about ECU?

A: My family, these are my brothers here — the football team.
