Tigers prevail in tale of
two halves

Memphis had its way early
and then spent the rest of the game beating back resurgent East Carolina
to claim a 67-54 victory Wednesday night at FedExForum in the Conference
USA opener for both teams.
Junior guard Joe Jackson
recorded seven of his team-high 15 points to help the Tigers (11-3, 1-0
C-USA) rocket to a 27-point lead at 39-12 with 2:16 left in the first
half.
That's when East Carolina
senior forward Maurice Kemp fired in 7 straight points to close out the
half, the first broadside in a 21-0 ECU run that carried over into the
second frame and changed the complexion of the game.
Memphis eventually
regained its footing, but not before the Pirates' 14-0 explosion out of
the gates at the start of the final period closed the gap to 39-33.
East Carolina (9-5, 0-1)
pulled within five on two occasions in the game's final 11 minutes but
could get no closer.
Freshman forward Shaq
Goodwin joined Jackson in double figures with 12 points. Senior forward
D.J. Stephens hauled in 11 rebounds to help the Tigers dominate the
battle of the boards 41-23.
Kemp and senior guard
Shamarr Bowden paced ECU with 11 points apiece. Senior guard Miguel Paul
and junior forward Robert Sampson each added 10.
Memphis outshot the
Pirates from the field 49.1 percent to 39.1 percent, but ECU was more
accurate from long range. The Pirates converted 9-of-21 (42.9 percent)
three-point tries, while the Tigers made only 4-of-12 (33.3 percent.)
ECU's first home matchup against a
league foe will come Saturday when Central Florida pays a visit for a 5
p.m. contest that will be carried by WITN-TV 7.
