A fourth inning single was all that kept
sophomore righthander Jeff Hoffman from recording a no-hitter as the junior
righthander hogtied North Carolina Central's batters for nine innings to
lead East Carolina to a 3-0 victory Friday evening at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Hoffman faced only 32 batters, firing 78
strikes in 120 pitches while fanning seven in the course of authoring the
complete-game shutout.
Hoffman got all the offensive support he
needed when junior third baseman Zach Houchins stroked an RBI double in the
bottom of the first.
Houchins, who was 3-for-4, factored into all
three of the Pirates' runs. His RBI triple in the bottom of third boosted
the lead to 2-0, and he finished the day's scoring one batter later when
junior first baseman Chase McDonald brought him home with a single.
ECU improved to 13-14 with the victory, its
second in a row. The outcome ended a nine-game winning streak for the
Eagles, who fell to 18-10.
The Pirates will try to put together their
first three-game winning streak since the first week of March when they bus
to Durham today to reciprocate NCCU's visit to Greenville. ECU and the
Eagles will face off at 3 p.m. at Durham Athletic Park.
