ECU takes opener with Jacksonville

GREENVILLE —  East Carolina broke a tie score at 3 with a pair of runs in the sixth inning and went on to take a 6-3 win over Jacksonville on Thursday night in the opener of a three-game series at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Travis Watkins got ECU (15-7) started with a one-out double in the sixth. He scored as Zack Mozingo followed with a run-scoring single up the middle.

The Pirates subsequently loaded the bases in the sixth and went ahead 5-3 on a walk to Luke Bolka on a full count pitch with two down.

ECU added a run in the seventh after Kirk Morgan led off with a single through the right side. He scored on a single by Mozingo after reaching third on a pair of ground outs.

Evan Kruczynski (3-0) pitched seven and two-thirds innings. He allowed eight hits and three runs, one earned, while walking one and striking out seven.

Joe Ingle picked up his fourth save, going the final inning and a third. Ingle didn't allow a hit although he walked two while whiffing one.

J.J. Gould homered to left in the top of the first to give Jacksonville (14-7) a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates answered with a tying run in the second after a leadoff single by Mozingo. A wild pitch enabled him to move to second and he scored on a single to right by Eric Tyler.

Watkins walked to start ECU's half of the fourth and Bryce Harman homered to right with two out for a 3-1 Pirates lead.

Dakota Julylia and Parker Perez had RBI singles for the Dolphins in the fifth to tie the score at 3 after a two-out error by ECU prolonged the inning.

Mozingo finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Morgan had two hits.

Seth DeWitt had two hits for Jacksonville.

The series continues at 6:30 tonight.
