for 'Mr. Football'

To suggest that he is the perfect symbol of Pirate football — the one player who can link East Carolina to its past, present, and future on the gridiron — wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination.

Essentially, though, Paul Troth would just as soon be viewed as an ordinary guy, just another member of the team.

But try as he may, it will be tough to shed the image of Mr. Football at East Carolina, which has been the de facto label for the program's starting quarterback since head coach Steve Logan arrived in Greenville. The tradition started with Jeff Blake and passed on to Marcus Crandell, then to Dan Gonzales, who handed the torch to David Garrard.
