In the grand scheme of things — at least to the
interested outsider — the recruiting visit by an all-state offensive lineman
from Georgia was little more than another talented athlete making one of a
string of visits to a courting school. But details of this particular visit
are insightfully revealing about one program's wary approach to adding new
ingredients to a hallowed recipe.
The highly-regarded offensive lineman had pegged East Carolina high on his
list. In fact, he wanted to come to become a Pirate. So, he made the journey
north. He toured the campus — no problem there. He liked what the coaches
were saying — no problem there.
But something just didn’t click when he met his potential future mates in
the trenches, the very guys he would have to support and rely on for the
next five years. There was no bond. Subsequently, he was not offered a
scholarship.
For the lineman, he is now at an ACC school. For the Pirates, the story
underscores the value of cohesiveness, according to the coach who has built
a deep and talented offensive line at ECU...
