East Carolina basketball coach Jeff Lebo is like much of the Pirate Nation at the moment. He'd like to know what's going to happen with the Pirates' bid to join the Big East Conference.

His immediate attention is on the official start of practice on Friday and following up successfully on ECU's first winning season in 14 years.

"I don't really worry about it," he said at Wednesday's media day gathering. [Replay Lebo's media day comments...] "I don't focus on it. I know as much as what I read in the newspapers. I know we're very happy in Conference USA."

But how does he really feel about the situation?

"I just wish it would end and we would know where we were going to go," Lebo said. "I think the hardest part for us as coaches and the university and for all the sports and probably for about 30 or 40 institutions right now of not knowing. That's the worst part. I wish we knew what was going to happen.

"The way it's gone down right now with one going here and three months something else happens, maybe next year something else happens — just sends the wrong message. It's really frustrating to try to figure out the landscape when you don't know what it's going to be like from a day to day basis."

The Big East would mean some shorter travel for the Pirates.

"The schools are a lot closer than going to a lot of the places that we go," Lebo said. "Big East basketball has got some programs in it that have got tremendous tradition — Final Fours, national champions. From a travel standpoint, it would fit us much better. That's not for me to figure out. (Athletic director) Terry (Holland) has kept all the coaches up to date as much as he can on what's happening. We've just have to wait and see at this point."
