NEWPORT, RI The Big East kept the name for its
contingent of basketball-geared athletic programs but the American
Athletic Conference retained some impressive traditions for its football
kickoff.
Those events over the last three years for the AAC
include a round of golf for athletic directors, coaches and media
members at Newport National Golf Club, a well-maintained challenge
complete with occasional sea breezes.
The AAC also has continued the clambake on Goat Island
adjacent to the Hyatt Regency, which will be the headquarters for
interviews with the coaches and players today.
Lobsters, steaks and chicken are among the items cooked
below ground and brought up to be served buffet style.
The fun is over as the focus turns to football today.
Coaches will present their prospects in the best possible
light today.
It will be interesting to see if there is any more to the
offseason dynamic between Connecticut and Central Florida. UConn coach
Bob Diaco wanted to put the Knights in the status of rivals. UCF coach
George O'Leary all but ignored the overture.
East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill is accompanied by
running back Chris Hairston, inside receiver Isaiah Jones, inside
linebacker Zeek Bigger and outside linebacker Montese Overton.
ESPN personality Kevin Negandhi enjoyed the clambake with
his wife and two small sons.
Negandhi will host before the cameras today. Monday night
he was a dad, telling his boys they had to eat what was on their plate
before they could get ice cream.
The league will announce its preseason poll today.
That's another signal that college football season is at
hand.
The Pirates open practice this week for their Sept. 5
opener at home against Towson. Who will be Shane Carden's successor at
quarterback are among the important issues to be resolved.
It's that time again and that means excitement for ECU
fans.
