Capsules & Brackets Summary

South Carolina 11, LSU 10

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Landon Powell hit a tiebreaking RBI double to cap South Carolina's three-run eighth inning and the Gamecocks eliminated Louisiana State.

The Gamecocks (45-21) squandered a six-run first-inning lead and trailed by as many as three runs before coming back to win the elimination game.

LSU (45-22-1) was knocked out of the CWS in two games for only the second time in 12 appearances in Omaha.

The Gamecocks' comeback started in the seventh when Kevin Melillo homered off Jason Determann to cut LSU's lead to 10-8.

South Carolina tied it in the eighth when Brian Buscher singled off reliever Billy Sadler (1-2) to score Steven Tolleson. Right fielder Jon Zeringue misplayed the ball, allowing Jon Coutlangus to score the tying run.

Powell, 3-for-5 with two RBIs, followed with the go-ahead double into the left-center field gap, scoring Buscher from first.

Cal State Fullerton 6, Stanford 5

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Richie Burgos hit a tiebreaking triple in the seventh inning, and relievers Wes Littleton and Chad Cordero held Stanford hitless over the last four innings in Cal State Fullerton's 6-5 victory in the College World Series on Sunday night.

Burgos' triple into the right-field corner in the seventh scored P.J. Pilittere and knocked Stanford starter Mark Romanczuk (12-1) out of the game.

The Titans (50-14) play again Wednesday, when they take on the winner of Tuesday's elimination game between Stanford (47-16) and South Carolina (45-21).

Littleton (7-3) took over for starter Dustin Miller in the sixth and retired all six batters he faced. Cordero, the 20th overall draft pick by Montreal, came on in the eighth and struck out three for his eighth save.

Justin Turner was 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Pilittere and Jason Corapci were both 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Titans.
