GREENVILLE — East Carolina
had chances to upset Houston in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum on
Saturday, the last coming when Jeremy Ingram was called for traveling in
the final seconds of overtime in a 64-60 Pirates loss to the Cougars.
"In my eyes, I thought it
was a legit play," said Ingram, who led ECU (7-14, 1-7 Conference USA)
with 18 points and 10 rebounds. "I was trying to make a play but I
wasn't able to make a play because of the call by the referee."
Taylor Gagnon had
rebounded a missed Houston free throw with 4.6 seconds left and ECU
trailing 62-60. Gagnon threw an outlet pass to Ingram near halfcourt.
The Pirate player collided with a Cougar defender and most of the crowd
of 5,641 were anticipating a blocking call that would have put Ingram at
the line for two free throws that could have tied the game.
Instead, the Cougars
inbounded and then went to the line with 0.2 seconds left to push the
final margin to four points.
A game of runs was even at
56-56 after 40 minutes of play. The Pirates jumped out to a 12-0 lead at
the outset but Houston responded with 14 unanswered points. Another ECU
spurt produced a 31-17 Pirates lead. Houston led by nine points midway
through the second half.
"I'm pleased with the
effort but we need to improve our execution," said ECU coach Ricky
Stokes.
Corey Rouse had nine
points and 17 rebounds for the Pirates. Two free throws by Rouse at the
outset of the extra period gave ECU a 58-56 lead but Rouse missed his
next four foul shots in overtime.
Ramon Dyer hit a 3-pointer
from in front of the Houston bench with 4:20 left that put the Cougars
ahead to stay at 59-58.
"I think both teams were
exhausted at the end," said Houston coach Tom Penders. "Ramon Dyer's
three was huge. It gave us a little separation."
Dyer had 17 points and 18
rebounds for Houston (14-6, 5-3). Lanny Smith had 20 points as he made 6
of 11 behind the arc. Smith also added eight assists for the Cougars.
Oliver Lafayette scored 18 points.
Dyer, Brian Latham and
Lafayette each had three steals among Houston's total of 12. The Cougars
lead the nation in steals with 12.3 per game.
The Pirates were 1-for-8
in field goal shooting in overtime. ECU led 52-41 on the boards but was
beset by 23 turnovers, which Houston converted into 27 points.
Sam Hinnant had 13 points
and five assists for the Pirates.
A 3-point play by Ingram
coming out of an ECU timeout tied the score at 56 with 1:36 remaining in
regulation. Ingram personally closed a 6-point deficit in regulation
with ECU's last six points before the extra period.
The Pirates will get a bit
of a breather before heading to Birmingham for a league contest with UAB
next Saturday. The game will tip off at 8:30 p.m.
