Knights usher Pirates out of tourney

From staff reports

MEMPHIS — Poor shooting by East Carolina helped Central Florida to a 65-52 win over the Pirates in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament on Wednesday night.

Conference USA Tournament: Results & Schedule

Josh Peppers scored a career-high 25 points for the fifth-seeded Knights, connecting on 5 of 10 attempts from beyond the 3-point arc. Overall, Peppers was 8 of 14 from the field.

UCF improved to 14-14 and will face fourth-seeded Houston tonight. ECU finished 8-20 in its initial season with Ricky Stokes at the coaching helm.

Despite being the focus of double-teaming defenders, Kinston senior Corey Rouse had 21 points and 14 rebounds in his final effort for the Pirates.

All 16 of Kinston guard Jeremy Ingram's points came in the second half, which saw UCF extend its advantage to 29 points early on. Ten unanswered points for ECU cut the gap but the final margin was as close as the Pirates would get.

ECU trailed 42-16 at the half, its lowest output of the season for the first 20 minutes. Peppers outscored ECU in the opening period with 17 points.

No player other than Peppers scored in double digits for UCF.

East Carolina missed all eight of its 3-point attempts and shot 19 percent in the first half. The Pirates connected on only five field goals in the opening 20 minutes, the last coming just over nine minutes before the break.

ECU entered as the event's 12th-seeded team. The Pirates have not had a winning hoops season since the 1996-97 team, coached by Joe Dooley, went 17-10.
