HOUSTON — Poor free-throw
shooting and a missed field goal opportunity in the final ticks sealed
East Carolina's 18th consecutive Conference USA road loss as Houston
held on for a 55-53 victory Saturday night.
Despite making only 12 of
21 free throws, ECU found itself in position to win thanks to the
long-range shooting of Luke Mackay. But Houston's Anwar Ferguson blocked
a jump shot by Derrick Wiley with 3 seconds to go to spoil the Pirates'
hopes.
Ferguson got the ball
after his fourth block of the game, securing the win for the Cougars
(7-7, 1-3 C-USA) and handing ECU its 10th straight league loss dating
back to last season.
The Pirates' last C-USA
win came at home on Feb. 8, 2003, over Southern Miss.
ECU (8-6, 0-4) had closed
within 54-53 with about two minutes to play on two free throws by
Mackay.
Marcus Oliver made a free
throw to extend the Houston lead to 55-53 in the final minute before
Wiley was able to attempt his final shot from 18 feet.
Andre Owens scored 21
points to lead Houston. Ferguson and Oliver each added nine points.
Mackay went 4-of-6 on
3-pointers and finished with 14 points for East Carolina, and Wiley had
10 points. Moussa Badiane had 13 rebounds and six blocked shots for the
Pirates.
ECU, which had only a
Friday travel day to regroup for the Cougars after hosting and losing a
late-night TV game against Louisville on Thursday, will have a week-long
turnaround before playing at Saint Louis next Saturday.
