Pirates run aground at High
Point

East Carolina's four-game winning streak came to a
screeching halt Wednesday night in a 10-2 pasting at High Point in front of
a Williard Stadium-record crowd of 890.
Junior righthander Jared Avidon (1-1) earned the
victory, striking out five and holding the Pirates to five hits and one
earned run over seven innings while the Panthers scored in every frame but
one to seal the outcome early.
After East Carolina scratched out a run in the top
of the first on three straight, two-out singles, Avidon clamped down and
limited the Pirates to two hits and one unearned run over the next 6 1/3
innings.
High Point got to East Carolina starter Austin
Chrismon for one run in the first and three in the second to establish a
lead that would grow as the game progressed. A sophomore righthander,
Chrismon (0-2) walked two, uncorked a wild pitch and gave up an RBI double
to Mike Miedzianowski to start the second inning before giving way to the
first of what became a parade of eight relief pitchers.
Miedzianowski, a freshman second baseman, was
3-for-4, scored two runs and had a pair of RBIs to highlight a Panthers
attack that produced 12 hits on the day.
Sophomore designated hitter Drew Reynolds and
junior first baseman/third baseman John Wooten had two hits apiece for the
Pirates. Reynolds' single in the top of the first drove in senior third
baseman Corey Thompson for East Carolina's only earned run.
The Pirates open their Conference USA schedule this
weekend in Orlando with a three-game set against Central Florida. The teams
will square off at Jay Bergman Field on Friday (6:30 p.m.), Saturday (4
p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).
