Senior southpaw Kevin Brandt parceled out four hits
over eight shutout innings and was backed by a 14-hit attack as East
Carolina trounced Conference USA foe Houston 10-3 Thursday evening at Clark-LeClair
Stadium.
The Pirates (21-8, 5-2 C-USA) exploded for four
runs in the second and six more in the fifth to remove the drama early in
extending their overall and league winning streaks to five games.
Senior third baseman Corey Thompson helped fuel the
offensive assault with three RBIs on a double and a sacrifice fly. Sophomore
outfielder Ben Fultz and senior second baseman/shortstop Tim Younger each
had two hits and a pair of RBIs and senior catcher Zach Wright and sophomore
first baseman Chase McDonald each contributed two hits and one RBI.
Houston starter Jared Ray was roughed up for nine
runs and 10 hits. The senior righthander got credit for four innings pitched
before heading to the showers after giving up five straight hits when East
Carolina came to bat in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cougars (11-17, 1-6) scratched out three
unearned runs against freshman righthander Deshorn Lake, who relieved Brandt
to start the ninth.
The victory was ECU coach Billy Godwin's 500th in a
collegiate coaching career dating back to 1999. Godwin has recorded 238 wins
in his seven seasons at the helm of the Pirates. He served as head coach at
Louisburg from 1999-2005.
East Carolina's three-game series with Houston continues
on Friday (6 p.m.) and wraps up on Saturday (10 a.m.).
