East Carolina staked itself to an early lead that
held up through five innings before Virginia responded with a barrage of
unanswered runs to sweep the teams� weather-shortened series with a 13-9
victory Saturday morning at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
ECU righthander Ryan Williams had an impressive
debut, blanking the Cavaliers for five innings as the Pirates built a 4-0
margin with a pair of runs in both the second and fourth. A junior transfer
from West Valley (CA) College, Williams surrendered four runs � one of which
was unearned � on six hits and three walks before giving way to freshman
righthander David Lucroy after facing two batters in the top of the seventh.
Lucroy was the first in a succession of futile
relievers as UVa added another run in the seventh, scored five in the eighth
and three more in the ninth to take a commanding 13-4 advantage.
The Pirates put together five runs on six hits in
the bottom of the final frame, but it was to little, too late.
ECU senior second baseman Bryan Bass was 3-for-4
with a run scored and two runs batted in as the Pirates outhit the Cavs
15-14.
Virginia�s Derek Fisher had three hits in six plate
appearances, including a three-run homer. The sophomore leftfielder got
credit for two runs scored and five RBIs.
Sunday�s scheduled third and final game of the
weekend set was cancelled due to weather concerns. The Cavaliers
romped 14-4 in Friday�s season opener between the teams.
East Carolina will regroup to host Campbell on
Tuesday at 3 p.m. |
