Junior righthander Ryan Williams parceled out seven hits and one run over eight innings and was backed up by a 13-hit offensive attack as East Carolina thumped St. John's 8-1 Saturday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Displaying consistent control, Williams (2-0) worked efficiently, facing only 29 batters and throwing 68 strikes in 100 pitches. The transfer from West Valley (CA) College struck out one and walked one in picking up his second victory of the season.

Senior second baseman Bryan Bass and freshman catcher Luke Lowery each scored a pair of runs and went 3-for-4 at the plate to account for almost half of the Pirates' hits. Bass also had an RBI.

Junior designated hitter Drew Reynolds came through with two hits and two RBIs and senior outfielder Philip Clark added a hit and a pair of RBIs for the Pirates.

Williams got all the runs he needed when ECU put up two first inning runs on an RBI sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Chase McDonald and a fielder's choice grounder by sophomore outfielder Nick Thompson.

Senior righthander Andy Smithmyer took over for Williams to start the ninth and logged a scoreless, one-hit inning.

Junior outfielder Martin Kelly had three hits and scored the Red Storm's only run in the sixth inning on sophomore third baseman Zack Lauricella's RBI double.

St. John's starter Sean Hagan (1-2) absorbed the loss. The senior southpaw was roughed up for 10 hits and eight runs, seven earned, in 5 1/3 innings.

Hagan went to the showers when five of the six batters he faced in the sixth had base hits to launch a five-run outburst that broke the game open.

The teams will wrap up their three-game set on Sunday at 1 p.m.
