Tulane too much for Pirates

From staff and electronic reports

East Carolina had promising starts in both halves but lost momentum both times as Conference USA foe Tulane asserted enough control to claim a 65-56 victory Wednesday night in Greenville.

With freshman forward John Fields having a career night with 17 points, the Pirates (5-11, 0-3 C-USA) led by as much as six points in the first frame and scored the first seven points after intermission.

Tulane (8-7, 1-2) more than offset each of those efforts with counter-surges that sent ECU to its ninth defeat in its last 10 games.

Donnie Stith finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, David Gomez added 12 points and and Matt Wheaton grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wave.

Stith's three-pointer with about seven minutes left in the first half gave Tulane the lead for good and began an 18-9 run that produced a 33-25 halftime advantage.

After the Pirates bolted to within one to start the second half, the Wave reeled off 10 straight points — including six by Gomez — and never let its lead drop below six for the remainder of the game.

Junior guard Darrell Jenkins and freshman guard Brandon Evans each scored 10 points for East Carolina. Freshman forward Gabe Blair was ECU's top rebounder with eight.

The Pirates now turn their attention to C-USA powerhouse Memphis, which pays a visit to Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum Saturday night (6:00 p.m., CSTV.)
