Owls overtake East Carolina

From staff and electronic reports

Rice went on a 13-2 run in the early stages of the second half to erase a six-point deficit, then kept East Carolina in the rear-view mirror the rest of the way to record an 83-74 Conference USA victory Saturday night in Houston.

Senior guard Morris Almond, the Owls' prolific offensive threat, scored seven of his game-high 34 points during the spurt, which wiped out a 51-45 lead that had been held by ECU at the 16-minute mark.

Senior guard Lorenzo Williams added a season-high 20 points for Rice, which improved to 11-10, 5-3 in C-USA.

East Carolina was led by senior guard Courtney Captain's 21 points while junior guard Cory Farmer and freshman forward John Fields each scored 15.

Led by Captain's 13 first-half points, the Pirates twice built nine-point leads and went into intermission with a 42-37 advantage.

In a facet of the game that affected the outcome, East Carolina was called for 27 fouls compared to Rice's 19, and the Owls converted 30 of 38 free throws while ECU made 11 of 17.

The loss, its 8th in a row and the 15th in its last 16 outings, dropped ECU to 5-16 overall, 0-8 in the league.

East Carolina will aim to reverse its fortunes in a home game with conference foe Central Florida that will tip off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
