Marshall squeaks by Pirates

Freshman forward John Fields' return to the lineup Wednesday night gave East Carolina enough impetus to be competitive, but not quite enough to reverse its fortunes on the scoreboard.

In his return to action after sitting out two games with a knee injury, Fields scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help the Pirates come within reach of victory before yielding to Marshall 54-51 in Greenville.

Guard Mark Dorris's jumper with 28 seconds left broke a 51-51 tie and lifted the Herd to the win in a Conference USA game in which ECU found itself in the uncustomary position of leading at the half 31-27.

The Pirates have lost a record 13 games in a row and 20 of their last 21. Their last victory came on Jan. 6 over Chowan.

Junior guard Darrell Jenkins scorred10 points and distributed six assists for ECU, while Marshall sophomore Mark Humphrey scored a game-high 12 points and collected 10 rebounds. Dorris added 11 points for the Thundering Herd.

Plagued by poor shooting through much of the season, ECU's offensive attack had been particularly anemic during Fields' absence, producing only 42 points in each game in blowout losses to Southern Miss and Southern Methodist.

The Pirates' difficulty making shots continued against the Herd and ultimately may have been the difference between victory and defeat. ECU converted only 29.5 percent of its field goal attempts (18-61) and 15.8 percent from three-point range (3-19), while Marshall made 37.3 percent from the floor (19-51), including 23.5 percent from behind the arc (4-17).

On a more positive note, the Pirates committed 8 turnovers while forcing twice that many from the Herd.

East Carolina's next opportunity to halt its losing streak will come Saturday night when it hosts league foe Texas-El Paso (7 p.m., WITN-TV 7.)
