Pirates on mini-streak

From staff and electronic reports

Senior Courtney Captain scored 16 points to help East Carolina defeat N.C. Central 68-47 Sunday afternoon, capping off a two-win day for ECU basketball in Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

Junior Darrell Jenkins added 11 points and freshman John Fields scored 10 and had 5 blocked shots as the Pirates put together their first three-game winning streak since the 2003-04 season.

Since an overtime loss at Richmond on Nov. 14, ECU (4-1) had defeated UNC-Greensboro and Limestone heading into its contest with the Eagles (2-1).

Senior Drew Johnson's 16 points led N.C. Central, whose only other double figure scorer was senior Jason Hervey with 13 points.

The Pirates out-shot the Eagles from the floor 43.0 percent to 35.8 percent and dominated in three-point accuracy, connecting on 40.0 percent from long range to NCCU's 7.1 percent.

Led by freshman Gabe Blair's 7 boards, ECU out-rebounded the Eagles 38-33.

The win polished off a perfect afternoon for East Carolina in a rare home hoops double header. Paced by Cherie Mills’ season-high 23 points, the Lady Pirates cruised to a 78-41 win over Florida A&M in a game earlier in the afternoon.

The East Carolina men will not return to action until Saturday, when it visits Liberty in a matchup that will tip off at 7 p.m. On that same day, the ECU women will host North Dakota State 3 p.m. in the first round of the Lady Pirate Invitational. The event's other participants, Fairfield and Florida State, will play 1 p.m.
