Tigers pad streak at ECU's
expense

Memphis pulled within one
win of equaling an epic NCAA basketball record with a 77-57 Conference
USA victory over East Carolina Wednesday night at the FedExForum.
Sophomore forward Wesley
Witherspoon scored 22 points, senior guard Doneal Mack added 15 and
senior guard Willie Kemp contributed 13 to lead the Tigers (12-4, 2-1
C-USA) to their 63rd straight league win, one shy of the standard set by
Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference from 1945-50.
Junior guard Brock Young
scored 21 points, junior guard Jontae Sherrod had 11 and junior forward
Jamar Abrams recorded 10 for the Pirates (6-11, 0-3 C-USA).
A 3-pointer by Mack gave
Memphis the lead for good less than 5 minutes into the game and the
Tigers, who built a 33-26 margin by halftime, were in command the rest
of the way.
East Carolina was without
the services of sophomore forward Darrius Morrow and freshman guard
Wakefield Ellison. Pirates coach Mack McCarthy announced an indefinite
suspension of the pair Wednesday for a violation of team rules.
If Memphis surpasses
Kentucky's record streak by winning at Rice on Saturday and taking care
of business at home next Wednesday against Texas-El Paso, the luster of
the accomplishment may not last long. Memphis has appealed an NCAA
ruling that the Tigers must forfeit 38 wins, including 19 in league
play, from the 2007-08 season because of questions about guard Derrick
Rose's eligibility.
East Carolina returns home
to face league foe Houston on Saturday (7 p.m.) The Cougars (9-7, 2-1
C-USA) are coming off a 75-65 victory Wednesday night over UTEP.
