East Carolina let most of a 16-point second half lead slip away before stemming the damage with some late free-throw heroics to escape an upset bid by Coker College Saturday night in Greenville.

Four of junior guard Jontae Sherrod's 11 points came on free throws in the final 1:15 to salvage the win for the Pirates after an 8-point run by the Division II Cobras had cut the margin to 65-62 with 1:36 remaining.

Junior forward Jamar Abrams and junior guard Brock Young led the Pirates with 16 points apiece and junior center Chad Wynn added 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Junior guard Vatrick Thompson scored a game-high 18 points and senior forward Mason Ambler had 15 points for Coker. Ambler grabbed 11 rebounds and reserve junior guard Thomas Wright hauled down 10 to help the Cobras out-rebound East Carolina 42-40.

The Pirates have a break in their schedule this week before returning to action with a home game against No 18 Clemson on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.
