Sophomore guard Corvonn
Gaines' three-pointer with less than 5 minutes remaining broke the
game's 12th and final tie and spurred East Carolina on its way to a
58-50 victory over North Carolina Central Monday night in Durham.
Senior guard Jontae
Sherrod scored 17 points and senior forward Jamar Abrams had 16 to
account for more than half the team's offensive output as the Pirates
(8-6) relied heavily on defense to claim their first road win of the
season and end a four-game losing streak.
The Eagles (5-7) led by 4
at the half and scored the first two baskets of the second frame for a
34-26 advantage before East Carolina countered with an 8-0 surge to knot
the game at the 10:54 mark.
The teams wrestled for
momentum over the next 6 minutes until Gaines' pivotal trey with 4:54
left ignited a 10-1 run that put the Pirates in command 57-48 with 67
seconds remaining.
Senior guard C.J.
Wilkerson scored a game-high 19 points and junior guard Landon Clement
had 16 for N.C. Central.
East Carolina begins its
Conference USA campaign on Saturday with a challenging matchup at
21st-ranked Memphis (4 p.m.; TV: CSS).
