Darrius Morrow

Darrius Morrow was a thorn to Marshall from start to finish, but it was his three-point play with 5 seconds left that was the dagger that finished off the Thundering Herd and sealed an 82-81 Conference USA victory for East Carolina Saturday night in Huntington, WV.

The 6-8, 255-pound junior forward from Atlanta scored a career-high 33 points, including 12 in the first half, and muscled down 8 rebounds to help the Pirates (11-8, 3-2 C-USA) claim their second road triumph in a row and their third win in four games.

It was Morrow's final rebound that set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Marshall (13-6, 1-3) held an 81-79 lead when East Carolina's Jontae Sherrod hoisted a three-point try with 9 seconds remaining. Morrow seized the rebound, scored a basket in close and was fouled at the 5-second mark.

Morrow's conversion of the free throw gave the Pirates their first and only lead of the contest — and it stuck as the Herd was unable to respond at the other end.

Senior guards Sherrod and Brock Young had 19 and 16 points, respectively, for East Carolina.

Senior forward Tirrell Baines scored 21 points, junior forward Dago Pena had 17, freshman guard DeAndre Kane added 15 and junior guard Damier Pitts contributed 10 for Marshall.

The Thundering Herd scored the game's first 7 points, led 50-38 at halftime and built the advantage to as much as 13 in the second frame before the Pirates began to turn the tide.

The victory comes in the wake of East Carolina's 74-62 C-USA win at Central Florida last Wednesday and sets the stage for the Pirates' return home for challenging league matchups against Southern Mississippi (Wednesday, 7 p.m.) and Houston (Saturday, 6 p.m.).
