Senior guard Jontae
Sherrod scored 28 points to lead East Carolina to its third straight
win, a 68-57 Conference USA triumph over Memphis Wednesday night in
Greenville.
The victory, the program's
first-ever over the Tigers, appropriately came on Senior Night and
assured the Pirates (16-13, 8-7 C-USA) of their first winning season
since 1996-97.
A pair of 3-point
daggers by ECU senior forward Jamar Abrams were the most damaging blows
in a 13-1 run late in the second half that broke open a back-and-forth
battle. The five-minute surge boosted the Pirates to a 60-47 lead with
3:31 remaining.
The contest marked the
final home appearance of Sherrod, Abrams and fellow seniors Brock Young,
a point guard, and Chad Wynn, a center.
Abrams, a catalyst during
the Pirates' three-game drive to nail down a winning season, scored 8 of
his 11 points in the final 6:19.
Sherrod, who made 6-of-13
from the field and 14-of-20 from the free throw line, also led East
Carolina in rebounding with 6. His career-high 28-point explosion
boosted his team-leading scoring average to 15.7.
Junior forward Darrius
Morrow added 11 points for the Pirates.
Freshman guard Antonio
Barton, with 15 points, was the only Memphis player in double figure.
The teams were knotted at
28 at halftime.
Memphis (21-9, 9-6) had
prevailed in all nine previous meetings between the teams, including
a
61-58 thriller on Jan. 8.
Combined with back-to-back
wins
over Texas-El Paso and
Rice,
the victory over the Tigers gives ECU its longest league winning streak
of the season and matches its longest since joining C-USA in 2001-02.
The triumph improves the
Pirates to 8-7 in the conference and for the third straight game sets a
new school standard for conference wins in a season. The victory also
assures ECU that it will for the first time avoid finishing the season
with a losing C-USA record.
The Pirates conclude the regular season
on the road with a Saturday matchup (8 p.m.) against league leader UAB,
then turn their focus to the Buick Conference USA Basketball Tournament
Mar. 9-12 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso.
