short-handed Pirates

The advantaged swapped
hands four times in the final minute but it was the last lead change
that mattered as sophomore guard Kierre Greenwood's floater in the lane
with 2.9 seconds left lifted Coastal Carolina to a 59-58 victory over
East Carolina Saturday in Myrtle Beach.
Sophomore guard Corvonn
Gaines, whose layup with 10 seconds remaining had pushed the Pirates
ahead 58-57, put up a near-miracle, off-balance jumper from midcourt as
time expired but the ball caromed off the rim to seal the outcome in the
Chanticleers' favor.
Junior guard Desmond
Holloway produced a game-high 22 points and senior forward Mike Holmes
had 16 to help Coastal (9-2) extend its winning streak to 7 games.
Senior guard Jontae
Sherrod scored 19 points and Gaines added 12 to pace East Carolina
(7-4).
Coastal reeled off the
game's first 10 points before the Pirates' makeshift lineup gained its
bearings and charged back to a 25-24 halftime lead. East Carolina senior
starters Jamar Abrams, a forward, and Brock Young, a point guard, were
sidelined with injuries and did not play.
Neither team was able to
establish more than a 5-point advantage in the second frame. The game
was tied on 11 occasions.
East Carolina plays its
second in a string of five straight road games on Wednesday when it
visits George Washington of the Atlantic 10 Conference.
