Tulsa pulls away from Pirates

TULSA, OK Tulsa made a closing run to take a 76-58 Conference USA win over visiting East Carolina on Thursday night.

Prince Williams gave ECU a 45-44 lead on a free throw with 11:48 left but the Golden Hurricane regained the lead on a layup by Stevie Repichowski with 11:27 to go.

The hosts outscored the Pirates 30-13 the rest of the way.

ECU (13-12, 2-8 C-USA) got 17 points and four assists from Paris Roberts-Campbell. Akeem Richmond had 14 points and six rebounds. Freshman Caleb White added 10 points and three assists. Michael Zangari had eight points. Antonio Robinson finished with four points and two assists.

Tulsa (12-12, 7-3) was led by 21 points and seven rebounds from James Woodard. Repichowski had 13 points. Shaquille Harrsion contributed 11 points and four assists for the Golden Hurricane. Brandon Swannegan had 10 points and six rebounds.

ECU was outrebounded 41-26 and committed 12 turnovers to 10 for Tulsa.

The Pirates made 21 of 54 field goal attempts for 38.9 percent. ECU dropped seven of 11 free throws for 63.6 percent. ECU was nine for 24 beyond the arc for 37.5 percent.

Tulsa was 28 of 58 on its field goal attempts for 48.3 percent. The Hurricane sank 14 of 18 free throws for 77.8 percent and was six of 22 on threes for 27.3 percent.

The Pirates play at North Texas at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Mean Green (11-13, 2-8) is coming off a 72-62 home loss to Old Dominion (12-13, 6-4) on Thursday night.

C-USA's leaders each sustained losses. Florida Atlantic took a 71-69 win at Texas-El Paso on a 3-pointer by Marquan Botley with three seconds left and Alabama-Birmingham hammered visiting Southern Miss, 84-60.

The Miners had an eight-game winning streak halted. The Golden Eagles had won seven in a row.

USM, UTEP, Louisiana Tech and Middle Tennessee are all 8-2 in C-USA.
