GREENSBORO — East Carolina trailed much of the way at UNC-Greensboro on Tuesday night but Akeem Richmond made three free throws with 1.2 seconds left and the Pirates took an 85-84 nonconference win after a final desperation heave by the Spartans caromed off the back rim.

A senior guard, Richmond led ECU (2-0) with 19 points. He made a steal that led to the Pirates' winning possession.

UNCG had a six-point lead with 1:05 remaining. A dunk by freshman Brandon Stith and two free throws by Prince Williams closed the margin to 82-80 with 31 seconds to go.

Pirates freshman Caleb White was fouled on an offensive rebound and dropped two free throws with 12 seconds left to cut the lead to 84-82.

Richmond was fouled behind the arc by Nicholas Paulos with 1.2 seconds remaining.

Richmond made five of 13 field goal attempts, including four of 10 behind the arc. He dropped all five of his foul shots. Richmond made four of ECU's 11 steals.

Paris Roberts-Campbell had 16 points and three assists for ECU. Freshman Caleb White supplied 11 of his 13 points in the first half. Marshall Guilmette and Stith added 10 points each.

Scoring six points each for the Pirates were Michael Zangari and Antonio Robinson. Williams had five points.

Freshman Tevon Saddler paced UNCG (1-1) with 34 points. Scoring 16 points apiece were Kyle Cain and Paulos.

Zangari, Roberts-Campbell, White and Stith had five rebounds each in the win. The Spartans had a 43-31 rebounding edge but committed 19 turnovers to nine for ECU.

The Spartans had a 15-point lead with 7:26 left in the first half but the Pirates trimmed the advantage to 40-30 at the break and began the second half with a 23-11 run.

ECU hosts Chowan at 7 p.m. Thursday.
