After festively tipping its 2003-04 basketball season with a Midnight Madness event the night before, East Carolina conducted its first full-scale practice Saturday morning.

During an offensive drill, sophomore guard Belton Rivers suffered a concussion when he ran into a pick and is expected to be sidelined for a few days.

The Pirates will play their first preseason exhibition on Nov. 6, hosting the World Young Stars. Campbell will visit ECU on Nov. 22 to open the regular season.

Conference USA weekend football roundup

No. 16 Texas Christian stayed unbeaten Saturday night, but it wasn't easy.

With the first BCS standings coming out Monday, the Horned Frogs (7-0, 4-0 Conference USA) had one last chance to prove they should start out in the upper tier. Instead, they were pushed to the limit before pulling out a 27-24 victory.

Lonta Hobbs ran for two touchdowns and Nick Browne kicked four field goals, but those were the only points TCU could muster out of nine drives that started within 60 yards of the end zone.

In other games involving C-USA teams:

— At Michie Stadium, East Carolina (1-6, 1-2) held off a late charge by still-winless Army (0-7, 0-5) to earn John Thompson his first win since taking over as the Pirates head coach.

— Memphis (4-3, 1-2) went on the road and laid a 45-14 shocker on heavily favored Houston (5-2, 2-1).

— South Florida (4-2) raced to a 55-7 rout of visiting I-AA opponent Charleston Southern (1-6).

— In a Friday night ESPN game, host Louisville (6-1, 2-1) pulled away to a 47-28 win over Tulane (3-4, 1-3).

Tulsa trustees sign off on move to C-USA

The University of Tulsa's CEO has indicated that his school is taking official steps towards joining Rice and Southern Methodist in a move to Conference USA from the Western Athletic Conference.

Tulsa president Bob Lawless said in a statement that the school's Board of Trustees "has authorized this proposed change in conference membership. We anticipate having a formal announcement with Conference USA regarding its membership realignment in the near future."

Rice University president Malcolm Gillis and C-USA commissioner Britton Banowsky had both issued statements Friday acknowledging that such a deal was in the works.

TCU basketball posts help wanted notice

Neil Dougherty, Texas Christian's second-year head basketball coach, is looking for a few more good men willing to work for free.

The Horned Frogs plan hold tryouts for walk-ons at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, according to an announcement posted on the TCU athletic department's website.

Interested students must pick up a health packet at the basketball office, fill it out and return the packet by Wednesday, Oct. 22.

During Dougherty's inaugural season at the helm of the program, TCU was 9-19 overall and finished 3-13 in Conference USA.

New ACC alignment separates Wolfpack and Heels

The Atlantic Coast Conference will divide into two six-team football divisions when Boston College joins league play.

Based on a scheduling formula devised by the conference's leaders, each team will play its division opponents, a primary rival in the opposite division and two cross-divisional games against rotating opponents.

The split places Sunshine State powers Florida State and Miami in separate divisions and also pairs Duke and North Carolina in an alignment opposite N.C. State and Wake Forest.

Virginia and Virginia Tech will be in the same division.

Here are the planned divisional alignments:

— Division A: Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Maryland, N.C. State, Wake Forest.

— Division B: Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech.

The primary cross-divisional rivalries will be Maryland-Virginia, Clemson-Georgia Tech, N.C. State-North Carolina, Wake Forest-Duke, Florida State-Miami, Boston College-Virginia Tech.
