WINCHESTER, VA — College
basketball referee Tony Herndon collapsed while officiating a Division III
game and later died.
The 43-year-old Herndon had an apparent heart attack about six minutes into
the second half of a game between North Carolina Wesleyan and Shenandoah on
Saturday night.
He collapsed after making an out-of-bounds call. While athletic trainers and
medical staff assisted Herndon, players on both teams huddled in prayer at
their benches. Herndon was then taken to Winchester Medical Center where he
was pronounced dead, police said Sunday.
Louisville assistant nabbed for DUI
LOUISVILLE — Louisville assistant
basketball coach Kevin Willard was arrested early Sunday and charged with
driving under the influence of alcohol.
Willard, 28, was arrested about five hours after Louisville's victory win
over Tulane at Freedom Hall, police spokeswoman Alicia Smiley said. Willard
failed several field sobriety tests, she said.
Willard, the son of Holy Cross coach Ralph Willard, was due to be arraigned
Tuesday.
"Even though he is close to me, he will be dealt with just as anyone else on
my staff or team would be," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said. "Whatever
legal penalty he may or may not face, the penalty within our basketball
program will be dealt with in a serious manner."
Memphis adds three years to Calipari pact
MEMPHIS — Memphis basketball coach John
Calipari received a three-year contract extension Sunday through 2010.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Calipari, who had two years left on his original contract, is 81-35 in four
seasons at Memphis, including a 10-4 mark this season. In 12 college
seasons, his teams are 274-106. He also coached the NBA's New Jersey Nets.
