Purple Alert partisans will confront their first
tangible test today. The initiative to facilitate advocacy by East Carolina
University constituents on behalf of the school's highest-priority projects
sent word out Monday that important matters are at hand in the N.C. General
Assembly.
A message was dispatched from Interim Chancellor
William Shelton to Purple Alert members informing them of a 2 p.m. vote
today in the Senate Finance Committee on Senate Bill 1098. The bill would
provide funding for a proposed Cardiovascular Diseases Institute at ECU and
a major Cancer Center at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Those who received the message were invited by
Shelton to join the ECU delegation in Raleigh for the committee meeting or
in the Senate gallery to watch the deliberations.
Shelton's communication noted that the Senate
Finance Committee meets in Room 544 of the Legislative Office Building, a
six-story structure at the corner of Salisbury and Lane Streets.
The message also included telephone and e-mail
contact information of N.C. senators to enable Purple Alert members to
express their sentiments about the committee vote to their legislators.
Purple Alert
has grown to 1,200 members since it was
formally launched less than three
weeks ago.
