A summer league basketball game that
turned out to be unsanctioned will keep senior center Moussa Badiane out of
East Carolina's lineup when the Pirates open their season in the Black
Coaches Association Invitational Tournament.
Badiane, whose infraction was announced
Monday by ECU, and junior point guard Raymond
Felton of UNC-Chapel Hill have each been declared ineligible for one game by
the NCAA for their participation in a non-certified game conducted by the
Capital Park Summer Basketball League in Raleigh.
The Tar Heels disclosed Felton's
suspension this past weekend.
Badiane will miss ECU's game on
Wednesday against Pepperdine in the BCA event at the RBC Center in Raleigh,
while Felton will be held out of the Tar Heels' Nov. 19 season opener
against Santa Clara in Oakland, CA.
According to an Associated Press
report, the organization that staged the offseason games, known as the
Chavis League, neglected to inform some players until after they had
participated that its competitions were not approved by the NCAA.
Badiane and Felton were unaware that
the Chavis League wasn’t properly certified as it had been in recent years.
Badiane will be eligible to play in all
other games beginning with the Pirates’ game against either Oregon State or
Siena on Thursday's second day of the BCA tournament.
Felton will see his first action when
the Tar Heels face Brigham Young in the first round of the Maui Invitational
on Nov. 22.
