Threatening weather postponed East
Carolina's scheduled baseball game with The Citadel on Sunday in Charleston,
SC.
The game was to have been the finale in
the three-day Homewood Suites Shootout. A game slated earlier in the day
between N.C. State and West Virginia was also axed.
A make up game for Pirates' game with
the Bulldogs will be announced at a later date, according to an ECU
announcement.
East Carolina won easily on each of the
first two days of the event,
mauling the Mountaineers 13-2 on
Friday and
pounding the 'Pack 13-1 on Saturday.
The Pirates, 5-3 on the season, return
home this weekend to inaugurate their new baseball fortress, Clark-LeClair
Stadium, by hosting the three-day Keith LeClair Classic. First pitch in the
new park is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday morning when ECU faces Michigan.
The Pirates are paired against Arizona
State on Saturday (5 p.m.) and will close the LeClair Classis with a game
against Georgia on Sunday (4 p.m.).
College baseball coach wins 1,400th game
MIDLAND, TX — Texas Tech coach Larry
Hays became the fifth NCAA Division I baseball coach to win 1,400 games as
the Red Raiders beat Lamar 5-3 on Saturday night.
Hays is now the NCAA's fourth
winningest active head coach and the fifth winningest all-time with a career
mark of 1,400-753-3.
The four other coaches to reach the
1,400 mark are Texas' Augie Garrido, Gene Stephenson at Wichita State,
former Texas coach Cliff Gustafson and Chuck Hartman at Virginia Tech.
Hays came to Texas Tech in 1987 after
spending 16 successful seasons at nearby Lubbock Christian University, where
he led the Chaps to an NAIA national championship in 1983.
At Texas Tech, the Dora, N.M., native
has won four conference titles and led the Red Raiders to nine NCAA
tournament appearances.
``Larry has proven that he is one of
the best collegiate baseball coaches in the country, and we are proud and
pleased that he is our coach at Texas Tech,'' Texas Tech athletics director
Gerald Myers said.
Hays will be honored for the milestone
when the Red Raiders play Texas-Arlington on Tuesday and again during the
final Texas Tech basketball game of the regular season, against Oklahoma on
March 5.
