A Greenville broadcasting company is
about to add some geographical range to its coverage of East Carolina
University football, basketball and baseball games while annexing a new
market and a new portfolio of shows at the same time.

Pirate Radio 1250 is branching
out. Replay Monday's shows to get the scoop on the
station's new twin in Washington. |

Pirate Media Group, the firm that owns
WGHB-AM Pirate Radio 1250, announced Monday that it has reached an agreement
to purchase Washington-based WDLX-AM 930 from NextMedia Group, Inc. The
acquisition comes less than two years after the startup bought 5000-watt
WGHB, converted that station's format to talk and sports, and began
producing an extensive lineup of ECU athletics-related programming.
WDLX, also a 5000-watt station, has
been a broadcasting fixture in Beaufort and several surrounding counties for
decades. Founded in 1942, the station's flagship program in recent years has
been the Rush Limbaugh Show, which it airs weekdays from noon to 3 p.m.
The new owners plan to continue to
carry Limbaugh's nationally-syndicated program in addition to eventually
adding a lineup of local programming.
The managing partners of Pirate Media
Group are Troy Dreyfus and Jonathan Ellerbe, both of whom are ECU alumni.
Dreyfus, noting the importance the
company places on its ECU sports programming, told Bonesville.net the new
property would offer a natural complement to Pirate Radio 1250's signal,
which is strongest in the Greenville vicinity and westward beyond Farmville.
"This will extend our footprint to the
east," he said. "Listeners in the Washington area, down to New Bern and
other towns to the east will be able to pick up Pirate sports."
Pirate Radio 1250 has been affiliated
with the Pirate Sports Radio Network since it went on the air in 2003.
Pirate Media Group, which will take
over the day-to-day operations of WDLX pending final FCC approval, says it
plans no immediate shuffling of the station's programming but will announce
changes at a later date.
